Great question! There are two ways to handle this: one is the perfectionist approach, the other is majority rules.
If you want to take the perfectionist approach, then while you’re at the grocery store, split your groceries into two separate purchases - one for needs and one for wants - and list them separately on your spreadsheet.
If you want to use majority rules, then if the purchase was mostly needs, count it as a need, if mostly wants, count it as a want, and keep the groceries in a single transaction.
This matters less for small purchases, and more for bigger purchases. If you shop at Costco and spend over $300 on a mix of needs and wants, you might want to split that transaction up appropriately.
